GUT with Anomalous U(1)A Suggests Heterotic M-Theory?

چکیده
We show that a new GUT scenario we proposed indicates that heterotic M-theory is one of the most interesting possibility to describe our world because of the two features in the scenario. The first feature is that E6 unified group plays an essential role not only in understanding larger mixing angles in lepton sector than in quark sector but also in solving the SUSY flavor problem by introducing non-abelian horizontal symmetry SU(2)H or SU(3)H . The second feature is that the cutoff scale must be taken as the usual GUT scale ΛG ∼ 2× 10 16 GeV to realize natural gauge coupling unification. Because this cutoff scale is smaller than the Planck scale or string scale, it may suggest the existence of extra dimension in which only gravity modes can propagate. This talk is based on a dozen papars[1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9] some of which are collaborated with T. Yamashita, M. Bando and Q. Shafi. Remarks on Anomalous U(1) Symmetries in String Theory A
Anomalous U(1) gauge symmetries appear frequently both in heterotic and type I/type II string theory. In the heterotic case we find at most a single anomalous U(1), while in open string theories several such symmetries can appear. We review the properties of the anomalous gauge bosons, the appearance of Fayet-Iliopoulos terms and the concept of heterotic-type I duality. Phenomenological applica...
متن کاملAnomalous U(1) Gauge Symmetries and Heterotic - Type I/ii String Duality∗
Anomalous U(1) gauge symmetries can appear both in heterotic and type I string theories. In the heterotic case we find a single anomalous U(1), while in open string theories several such symmetries can appear. Nonetheless, there is a conjectured duality symmetry that might connect these two theories. We review the properties of anomalous gauge symmetries in various string theories as well as th...
متن کاملCan String Theory Predict the Weinberg Angle?
We investigate whether the hypercharge assignments in the Standard Model can be interpreted as a hint at Grand Unification in the context of heterotic string theory. To this end, we introduce a general method to calculate U(1)Y for any heterotic orbifold and compare our findings to the cases where hypercharge arises from a gut. Surprisingly, in the overwhelming majority of 3-2 Standard Models, ...
متن کاملHeterotic Anomaly Cancellation in Five Dimensions
We study the constraints on five–dimensional N = 1 heterotic M–theory imposed by a consistent anomaly–free coupling of bulk and boundary theory. This requires analyzing the cancellation of triangle gauge anomalies on the four–dimensional orbifold planes due to anomaly inflow from the bulk. We find that the semi–simple part of the orbifold gauge groups and certain U(1) symmetries have to be free...
متن کاملPseudo-anomalous U(1) symmetry in the strong coupling limit of the heterotic string
We discuss, in the context of the strongly-coupled E8 × E8 heterotic string proposed by Hor̆ava and Witten, the appeareance of anomalous U(1)X symmetries of a nonperturbative origin, related to the presence, after compactification, of five-branes in the five-dimensional bulk of the theory. We compute the gauge anomalies and the induced Fayet-Iliopoulos terms on each boundary, which we find to be...
